1/2/2010 REVISED
Notice:No buyer for Baileywick Company
was found. Our 29 years of charter sailboat management out
of Solomons came to an end December 1, 2009. The Rainbow 24
[Pot] was sold to a local buyer for private use.
The Niagara 35 [Segel] was sold to
a former timesharer and will be in the Solomons area over
the winter. The Bailey home on Leasons Cove has
been sold and the new owners took ownership on November 30,
2009. It is wonderful that they are also sailors and a 47'
Alden will take Segel's place at the dock. All Baileywick
customers have had their deposits returned. We are very
sorry our loyal customers have had to find alternate sailing
solutions. In spite of being profitable over the years,
Baileywick has been more of a club of friends than a cut
throat business. We will miss all of you! The Baileys
have moved to Emerald Heights, a continuing care retirement
community in Redmond Washington and took residence on
12/30/2009. Why Washington State? John was born and
raised in Seattle, graduated from the University of
Washington, son and family now live only 8 miles away, and
daughter and family are only 4 hours drive away in Oregon.

The
Niagara 35 has earned a reputation as a fast, easily managed blue water
cruiser. The traditional looks of a pronounced sheer, trunk cabin with a
teak molding, and bowsprit provide a functional deck layout and sail plan.
The wide side decks, molded bulwark and large foredeck permit secure sail
handling and anchoring. The V-ed hull, long fin keel and balanced rudder
provide a soft dry ride at sea, excellent tracking ability and quick but
light response from the helm either under sail or power.
The Niagara 35 interior has head and galley placed amidships for reduced
pitching motion, direct access from either cabin, and excellent ventilation.
The arrangement works superbly either passaging or at anchor, providing four
good separate sea berths with two cabin privacy. The main salon has a drop
leaf table on center with settee berths outboard, both convertible to
doubles, a door forward providing access to the sail bins and workbench. A
large hatch in the foredeck makes for easy stowage and access to the
foredeck without going aft. The aft cabin has two quarter berths [one
double], a large hanging locker and chart table with passage forward through
either the head or galley. Hinterhoeller's superb construction methods,
systems, and choice of equipment compliment the design to produce a secure
functional and beautiful cruising yacht.
The mainsail's "Dutchman" sail flaking system and the roller
furling 135 percent genoa give convenient sail handling. The 27 horsepower
Yanmar engine is the best available and easily pushes Segel at hull speed.
The Autohelm 4000 MKII autopilot and Garmin GPS Map 172
color charting system with tide program located at the helm provide for safe and
convenient navigation. Segel's propane stove, cabin heater, hot water system and
shower contribute to cruising comfort. The Achilles four person dinghy allows
anchoring out and getting ashore when desired.
SpinSheet June 2001 Review Comments:
"As a former owner of the Niagara 35 Panache, I was curious to read the "Used Boat Boat Marketplace"
review of the Mark Ellis design. I generally agree with the comments but would take exception to its depiction
as a coastal cruiser. Having sailed my boat from Los Angeles to Florida via the Panama Canal, Columbia, and the
Western Caribbean over a three-year period--with plenty of offshore, open ocean days and miles (mostly single-handed)--I
found the Niagara 35 to be an ideal bluewater performance cruiser. Rigged with the hank-on staysail and reefed
main, the helm balanced easily in heavy weather while still maintaining excellent ability to go to weather. "The
classic interior layout was the selling point when I bought the two-year-old boat in Marina del Rey, CA. The cockpit
was comfortable and dry, the motion was graceful for working in the galley or using the head while at sea."
